The Foreclosure Crisis is Much More than Figures and Games for Politicians
February 13, 2010 |
The foreclosure crisis is something much more than statistical figures and games for politicians. It is about real people. The Sun Star is one of the organizations that is jumping into the fray to do something real. It will, with the assistance coming from California Health Care Foundation Center for Health Reporting study the problems of people around in a new series named Houses of Blues.
Merced County can be regarded as ground zero of the foreclosure crisis. It has been noted also by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal as well as many media outlets of significance. The foreclosure related housing problem is gnawing deep into the community impacting on credit scores as well as families with little children.
The bigger state and national problems also are of importance. Mental health services have been cut by both the governments. Children are under stress that is being relayed to them by the adults and this is telling on their school performance.
The problem of homelessness is no longer something distant that happens to others. One hapless woman in the series whose unemployment benefit does not make up for her mortgage dues of $1,118 is fearful that ultimately she would “end up at the tent camp on Santa Fe.”
Some families are large including several generations of siblings. The tenants have not been spared the pain of the housing crisis. They have to shift once their landlord is foreclosed upon and this means money – dollars for security and advance apart from removal costs.
The situation has come to such a pass that even the real estate as an industry is regrouping itself. Andy Krotik of Altwater has been for the last two decades helping people to buy house but now he is operating on behalf of the banks and foreclosing houses. Krotik is far from happy about this change. He lamented, “I used to be a hero getting people into a house. Now I’m nobody’s hero.”
The California HealthCare Foundation Center of Health Reporting is a part of California HealthCare Center Foundation based in Oakland – it being non-profit without party leanings. It also has links with University of Southern California’s Annenberg School.
The question now on everybody’s lips about will this crisis never come to an end? In the series many solutions are being offered – something that is badly required today.
